How to read your NDIS plan in 20 minutes

10 August 2026 · 7 min read · Ametz Community Care NDIS team

A page-by-page walkthrough: goals, budgets, management type, dates and the three things people most often miss.

Plans are written in scheme language, not human language. Work through it in this order and you will understand yours faster than most people do in a year.

Step 1 — Dates and management type

Find your plan start and end dates, then how each budget is managed: agency-managed, plan-managed or self-managed. This single detail decides which providers you can use and who pays the invoices.

Step 2 — Goals

Goals are the hook every support hangs on. Vague goals lead to refused claims. "Be more independent" is weak; "prepare five evening meals a week with prompting only" is strong.

Step 3 — The money

  • Flexible funding: usable across most day-to-day supports.
  • Stated funding: locked to a named purpose.
  • Funding periods: when each instalment becomes available.

The three things people miss

  • Support coordination hours that were funded but never used.
  • A transport level that no longer matches their work or study hours.
  • Consumables funding sitting untouched all year.
